A unique experience awaits you in historic Felton, CA this September. Arrangements have been made to offer a special photo opportunity on the narrow gauge Roaring Camp & Big Trees tourist railroad, followed by a ride on the standard gauge Big Trees Railroad, all for one low ticket price! This event is timed to coincide with the 2019 National Narrow Gauge Convention, which will be held in Sacramento, CA September 4th - 7th. The RC&BT dates back to 1963, when F. Norman Clark built a three foot (36) gauge tourist railroad up a mountainside through old growth redwood trees at Felton CA. Steam powered from the very beginning, RC&BT operates four steam engines, including three geared type logging locomotives. The 3.25 mile ride up the mountain uses 8% grades, and a switchback halfway up is even steeper! The train weaves around giant redwood trees, accurately recreating the feel of riding a log train into the woods 120 years ago. Historic Shay and Heisler locomotives power the train, and the sound from the exhaust out of the smokestack as these geared engines charge up the grade is awe inspiring. Every trip up the mountain for over 55 years has been thrilling for every passenger, and the railroad is very popular among steam fans on the West Coast.

Roaring Camp& Big Trees Railroad Excursion
This special event will be different from the regular experience in that arrangements have been made to allow passengers to disembark from the passenger train up on the switchback and photograph the train doing a photo run by up the 11 percent switchback. Another photo run by will be performed in the clearing at the top of the mountain.
Added to the excitement will be a second train following the first up the mountain. Roaring Camp owns a couple of pieces of freight equipment, so the passenger train will be followed by a period freight, and both trains will be doing photo runbys. The railroad has agreed to use one of their Shays on the passenger train and the Heisler on the freight train (if the Heisler is available of course, the railroad does reserve the right to make substitutions). Where else in the United States can you see a narrow gauge Shay AND a narrow gauge Heisler operating at the same time???? Nowhere!!! Fans of geared engines, logging railroads, and modelers of logging railroads in all scales will enjoy this unique railfan experience. Two hours of steam train excitement is in store.

That is not all however. Included in this special day is a ride down the standard gauge Big Trees Railroad from Felton to Santa Cruz and return. This right of way dates back to the narrow gauge (36) Santa Cruz & Felton Railroad of 1875. The South Pacific Coast Railroad came over the mountain a few years later, bringing dependable transportation and speedy access to the rest of California and the San Francisco bay area. This very successful narrow gauge railroad was standard gauged in 1909. This train runs from the giant redwoods of Henry Cowell Redwood State Park (Big Trees on the SPC) down through the Lorenzo River Gorge and through a tunnel bored in 1875 to reach the Santa Cruz boardwalk. This round trip navigates rough terrain and steep grades just like the narrow gauge did 130 years ago and is a must for any rail enthusiast. The event will begin around noon and finish around 4pm (exact times to be announced later).
Tickets for the Roaring Camp Excursion are only $79 per person, making this unique photo and riding opportunity an excellent deal. This event will only happen if we get enough interest. A deposit is not required at this time, only a declaration of  interest. When the threshold is reached, and the event gets the green light, the interested parties will be contacted, and payment taken. The passenger train is limited to only 200 people, so space is limited. The Southeast Narrow Gauge & Short Line Museum will be handling the payments when the time comes. Any proceeds from the event will go toward restoration projects at their location in North Carolina. An announcement regarding the status of the event will be made no later than June 30, 2019.

To express your interest in participating in this extravaganza, please send an email HERE. Serious inquiries only please and you will be asked to provide a valid email address and phone number for information to be sent to you. In the next few days we will be adding tips on getting to Felton, and locations to book a room to stay the night. Those planning on attending the National Narrow Gauge Convention should know that Felton is 3.5-4 hours from Sacramento. Join us in this rare opportunity to see narrow gauge geared engines running in their native habitat. Rail fan and modeler alike will have an experience they will never forget.
