1937 Dodge Railway Express Agency Truck
Alexander Chapter NRHS
Since the end of 2008, our chapter has been interested in obtaining a vintage Railway Express Agency truck in order to have a moblile ambassador for our museum . When restored, it is envisioned that the truck could be sent to street festivals all around North Carolina and attract people to our chapter and restoration efforts. Initially, we found a candidate for restoration in nearby Taylorsville. Negotiations were ongoing for the 1947-vintage truck, but priciing from the owner was still on the high side.
Fortunately, chapter member Gerald Williamson had some contacts with an antique car club, and a friend-of-a-friend had a 1937 Dodge REA van that he was willing to donate. On November 6, 2011, members Kim Hullfish and Ted Smith headed to Huntsville, AL and winched the truck up on Kim's rollback. On Tuesday, November 8, the truck arrived at the boxcar shop of the chapter... Check back here often to follow the progress of this project!
(Right) Before there was UPS or Federal Express, the Railway Express Agency handled the packages that fueled the American Economy.

This 1937 Dodge REA, shown here in a field in Huntsville, Alabama, will be restored as a mobile ambassador for the Newton Depot and the Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum.
At left, Ted Smith single-handedly pushes the van out of the mud. Above, the engine, at least on the outside, looks to be complete.
Above, we couldn't have done this without Kim Hullfish and his equipment and experience in moving vintage equipment...Thank you Kim...
At left, our crack crew examines the engine, but at least thankful that this project came with wheels!
As can be seen, the undertaking of this project is a hefty job indeed. Fortunately, the chapter has the manpower and expertise to make this happen, but we need YOUR help with the funding.
